THE ANIMAL RESEARCH FACILITY (ARF) OF THE MADISON VA HOSPITAL IS AN AAALAC (ASSOCIATION FOR ASSESSMENT AND ACCREDITATION OF LABORATORY ANIMAL CARE) ACCREDITED FACILITY THAT CURRENTLY HOUSES OVER 2,500 MICE AND RATS FOR USE IN RESEARCH. TO ACHIEVE AND MAINTAIN THIS ACCREDITATION, THE VA ARF IS REQUIRED TO HAVE AN ONGOING HEALTH SURVEILLANCE PROGRAM IN PLACE TO MAINTAIN THE HEALTH OF ANIMALS, TO PREVENT DISEASE OUTBREAK, AND TO MAINTAIN THE INTEGRITY OF THE RESEARCH. RELATED TO ANIMAL TESTING REQUIREMENTS, THERE IS ALSO A REQUIREMENT TO ROUTINELY TEST THE SANITATION OF ANIMAL HOUSING EQUIPMENT TO ENSURE PREVENTION OF DISEASE TRANSMISSION BOTH TO OTHER ANIMALS AND TO PEOPLE.
